Roofs are often described as your protection from “the elements,” which is understood as virtually any outdoor weather condition. In today’s post, local roof repair and replacement company Expert Contracting shares an in-depth look at these elements, and how they cause wear and tear on roofs.

Rain
Roofing systems are sloped in order to shed rain towards the gutters. The outer layer of roofing material facilitates shedding, and does it well most of the time. Roofs are not completely waterproof, nor should they be: a roof needs to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of roofing materials, as well as moisture and heat that makes its way under the roof.
Wind
When high winds hit the side of the house, it changes direction and creates a vacuum that results in uplift. The roof edge bears the brunt of this and lifts shingles from the edges. Combined with high winds directly hitting the roof slope, it can cause significant damage that can result in roof replacement. Roofing systems with high wind ratings typically feature adhesive-reinforced shingles, which helps reduce the damage caused by storms.
Snow and Ice
Poor roofing insulation and ventilation can cause a phenomenon known as ice dams. When heat trapped in the attic raises the roofing temperature to above freezing, it melts the snow on the rooftop, which flows to the roof edge before refreezing. This forms a dam that blocks proper drainage and causes water to back up into the roof.
Solar Heat and UV Radiation
The sun gives off many types of electromagnetic radiation. What we perceive as visible light is but a small fraction of it. Most of the harmful and invisible radiation is blocked by the ozone layer, however, two of these make it through: infrared and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Infrared radiation is what causes solar heat, while UV radiation causes cellular breakdown. The granules on asphalt shingles are intended to protect the asphalt layer underneath, which is vulnerable to damage caused by UV rays. Roofs with reflective outer surfaces, intended to reduce heat absorption, are less vulnerable to damage caused by solar radiation.
