Vinyl is not a siding material that you ignore after installation. Even if it has low-maintenance qualities, it still needs care and attention now and then. Local siding and roof replacement contractor Expert Contracting highlights the do’s and don’ts of vinyl siding maintenance you need to keep in mind.

DO: Wash Your Siding Once a Year
Vinyl siding requires a yearly wash to keep it looking good. Do so using a soft cloth or an ordinary long-handled, soft bristle brush. If the siding has a textured surface, use only a soft brush to keep stains away from the grooves in the texture. Start from the base of your home and work your way up so when you rinse, the cleaning solution will run down to the bottom.
DO: Use the Appropriate Cleaner
A homemade cleaning solution of laundry detergent and warm water is enough to keep the surface of the vinyl siding clean. If you intend to use a commercial cleaner, be sure to purchase the most appropriate products. According to the Vinyl Siding Institute™, general cleaners like Armor All® and Nice & Easy® can be used to get rid of dirt, bird droppings and spider webs. Rinse thoroughly with water after removing the stain.
DON’T: Use Cleaning Products That May Harm the Siding
Avoid certain cleaners that can affect the appearance and the life span of the vinyl siding. Siding and roofing companies advise against the use of organic solvents, liquid grease removers, undiluted chlorine bleach, nail polish remover (acetone) and furniture polish or cleaners for vinyl siding.
DON’T: Use a Power Washer
Unless you have working knowledge when it comes to using a pressure washer for vinyl siding, it is best to skip it in favor of a garden hose. Some siding manufacturers don’t want power washing to be used on their products. Some do allow, but they often have limitations on the amount of pressure and type of cleaner that can be used.
